Can you think of a more perfect way to celebrate in the tropics than with a bonfire on the beach? Whether it’s a birthday, honeymoon, anniversary, a simple gathering of friends or an idyllic night during your vacation, Bonfire Bliss BVI can light your fire from start to finish.
Operating on Tortola, Paradise Promotions and Events’ Bonfire Bliss BVI was created by Javier Smith. Born in Jamaica but raised on Tortola, Smith was previously working in the marine sector. When a friend traveled to Miami for a wedding and attended a relaxed beach bonfire before the big event, he came home and described his experience to Smith. While out at sea, tourists were constantly asking him where to go and what to do on Tortola, and after the hurricanes of 2017, choices were, and still are, somewhat limited as the islands recover.
“It’s the same kind of market here as in Florida, so I decided to give it a try in the BVI,” Smith said.
The biggest challenge was getting fire permits from government agencies. Smith set up a meeting to explain to officials what he was attempting to do and from that meeting, guidelines were established regarding beach access permits, fire permits and noise permits for parties with a large DJ system. Bonfire Bliss BVI opened for business in November.
Things didn’t take off right away. Smith started with a larger package but people weren’t booking because of the price. He realized he had to scale back to make it more attractive and reasonable. The basic package is now $295 and includes permits, set-up of six chairs, a fire pit and firewood for four hours, a table with linens, ingredients for s’mores, a cooler, a music speaker that can stream from any smart device, tiki torches and oil to deter mosquitoes and sand flies, and cleanup and garbage removal. Items such as additional chairs, fire pits, glow-in-the-dark accessories and other elements can be added to the basic package for larger parties. Services such as catering or transportation can also be arranged.
Any beach on Tortola is an option. Although last-minute bookings can often be accommodated, clients are encouraged to contact Smith at least a week in advance to make sure the beach isn’t booked for some other event and to get the permits in place. If weather forces a cancellation, another date or location can be set.
As the business grows, Smith hopes to expand with services such as pick-up from villas and resorts and a small boat for parties on other islands.
Next on his agenda is a Bonfire Bliss Tour, which he hopes to start for the next tourist season. An island tour will explore Tortola’s historic sites and attractions and end with a bonfire on the beach with a guide to talk about BVI history and culture.
“I wanted to offer a more exotic thing for tourists to do in the BVI to make their vacation a little bit better,” Smith said. “We’re creating memories.”
