Is Obama's healthcare plan opposition about socialism or capitalism?
180 degrees
By DEVIN ROBINSON
Saturday, September 26th 2009

President Obama's Healthcare Reform has headlined just about every major and minor national media outlet for the past 2 to 3 weeks. We have heard and seen individuals across the country losing their minds and bearing in public settings. The town hall meetings have become the modern day Roman Coliseum and State Representatives have become chitterling circuit hecklers, which by the way continues to tarnish the integrity of America's democracy.

When you have South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson heckling the Commander in Chief during a public speech, this sends a toxic message across America that we have time to continue with the polarization and divisive behaviors instead of focusing on solutions.

Here are the facts. America is dictated by capitalists and managed by politicians. The true problem behind this bill is it could disrupt the cash flow to the investors, pharmaceutical CEOs, bankers, and other money-driven stakeholders of the industry. So even in difficult times when the U.S. budgets are burdened with record deficits, the irresponsible and unethical capitalists prefer to continue with the cash instead of focusing on the "care." That is what this argument is about. But let's take a look at three major arteries of what this bill would perform surgery on.

1. Public option. What is wrong with giving individuals a public option to who provides them with healthcare insurance and benefits? Many complain about the government's ability to manage anything. Well guess what? Then the private companies will have nothing to worry about because if their argument is precise, the Government will not be able to compete. UPS and Fedex continue to compete with the United States Postal Service without concern of their market share being stolen. All those companies provide a good service and invest in innovative technologies to keep customers coming back. Why not give the American people an option as such in healthcare?

2. Corporate responsibility. Corporations often do not do as much as they could with regards to keeping premiums at a minimum and providing their employees with the best possible provider. Instead, they give them the best of the worst and, in some cases, force one provider on them. If there is a public option, employees can elect to select a package that offers better premiums and services that are fitting for their needs.

3. Taxing halthcare benefits. True, healthcare benefits are part of the compensation package, however taxing these benefits would be an unfair practice. Why? The tax charged would be based on the value of the package. This is how Uncle Sam determines the tax rate of anything by looking at its value. So we are once again back at square one. Heathcare insurance providers will convey the value of each package to the corporation and in turn, the corporation will tax these benefits for Uncle Sam's purposes. With the rise in premiums, I don't think that may be a good route to take either.

These are three of the real issues to focus on when you decide to debate the bill. Ignore the rhetoric and influx of emotions during the discussion. Look at this proposition critically and analytically. Rap group Wu-Tang Clan prophetically said it back in the 1990s - "Cash Rules Everything Around Me!" With that being said, at the end of the day, we call our country free. We call our country compassionate. We call our country the protector of the free world. However, what about its free citizens. Are we really keeping sight of the solutions our President is proposing or are we focusing on the things those dead presidents can provide?
