By SEAN McCOY
Monday, November 2nd 2009

ST. THOMAS - Two men were shot and killed early Saturday morning in downtown Charlotte Amalie and a third man was killed by gunfire Saturday night, according to police.

One of the victims was a member of the V.I. National Guard and was set to be deployed today with the 786th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Lewayne Fraser of St. Thomas and Victor Smith of Tortola were shot at about 3:43 a.m. Saturday in the area of Garden Street and Nye Gade, police said Sunday. Fraser was a member of the National Guard.

The two men were traveling in a white vehicle when one or more gunmen opened fire on them, according to police. Both men died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said that the men were in their early 20s.

The National Guard held an emergency meeting with its members on Saturday but did not respond to Daily News requests for more information about Fraser's death.

In a separate shooting, a third man died Saturday night at Schneider Hospital, according to police.

At 9:20 p.m. Saturday, police were informed that a man was admitted to the hospital. The victim, later identified as 26-year-old Orande Francis of Anna's Retreat, was shot once in his upper abdomen and died from the injuries, police said.

The victim was dropped off at the hospital by one or more family members. Family members told police that they heard a gunshot outside a private residence in Estate Tutu.

Further information about the homicides was not available Sunday night.

Fifty-two homicides have been reported in the territory so far - 33 on St. Thomas, 18 on St. Croix and one on St. John.

Police asked that anyone with information about the homicides contact Detective Sgt. Lionel Bess at 715-5545 or 642-8449 or Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-TIPS.
