Veterans Day activities scheduled across V.I.
By GENEVIEVE RYAN
Tuesday, November 10th 2009

Virgin Islanders will join the nation in the observance of Veterans Day on Wednesday.

Formerly known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day takes place annually Nov. 11 in remembrance of the millions of Americans who have served and continue to serve their nation as a member of the armed forces.

- On St. Croix, members of the American Legion will observe the day with a parade at 9:30 a.m. in Frederiksted.

Lineup for the parade begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Frederiksted Post Office with movement to the Frederiksted Bandstand, where a ceremony will take place. Rear Adm. Denise Canton, a St. Croix native, will be guest speaker.

Canton is the director of the Office of Commissioned Corps Force Management in the Office of Public Health and Science. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Illinois Wesleyan University and master's and doctorate degrees in nursing from The Catholic University of America, and a juris doctor from Georgetown University Law Center.

- On St. John, a Veterans Day parade and ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Crabby's Watersports and follow Route 107 to the Coral Bay Agriculture Station - American Legion Viggo E. Sewer Post No. 131 Headquarters - on Kings Hill Road.

Post 131 will commemorate the opening of its headquarters and participate in St. John's first Mini Agriculture Fair, co-sponsored by Post 131 and the Department of Agriculture. Food and drinks will be available.

- On St. Thomas, a parade will begin at 3 p.m. at Addelita Cancryn Junior High School. The route will proceed to the entrance of Western Cemetery, down Main Street to Veterans Park, where a short ceremony will follow. The British Virgin Islands Police Marching Unit will appear in the St. Thomas parade this year.

For information in other Veterans Week activities, contact the Office of Veterans Affairs at 774-6100 on St. Thomas or 773-6663 on St. Croix.
