Alexis E.C. Ramos
Alexis E.C. Ramos, M.D., retired director of the emergency room at Schneider Hospital, passed away while sleeping in the ICU at Schneider Hospital on Oct. 17, 2009.
Born in Catanduanes, Philippines, on Aug. 7, 1942, Dr. Ramos was the eighth child of the late Domiciano T. Ramos Sr. and the late Lucena Cristobal.
The first viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Turnbull's Funeral Home. The second viewing will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Estate Mafolie, with services at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Mafolie Catholic Cemetery.
In 1984, Dr. Ramos worked in the emergency room, primarily focusing on helping the people of the Virgin Islands with diligence, concern, dedication and love with strong commitment to the community. A well-loved doctor in the emergency room, Dr. Ramos supported the growth of emergency room medicine in the Virgin Islands, first at the Knud Hansen emergency room, and later at Schneider Hospital.
"A doctor for the masses" was what one underprivileged, uninsured patient said about Dr. Ramos when the doctor helped the patient buy his medicine so he could take them on time.
Dr. Ramos once paid a taxicab driver to take home an ailing woman who could not afford to get a cab on her own. Dr. Ramos did that just so the old woman could have a much-needed rest at home and be with her family - a truly random act of kindness and concern from someone who has practiced the purest principles of a "good physician."
Through the doctor's efforts, the Virgin Islands community gained greater trust and confidence in emergency room care.
According to one prominent local physician, there was a point in time when there was shortage of physicians and Dr. Ramos worked on a rotation basis to cover both the St. Thomas and the St. John clinics without disruption and without request for additional compensation. It was truly "service above self" - a true hero of emergency room medicine.
Dr. Ramos is survived by brothers, Dante and Manny; sisters, Lolita and Lida; nephews and niece, Theresa Aguilar-Phillips, Noel and Juli, Joselito and Patrick; nephew-in-law, Dion Phillips and son, Ernest Owen Phillips, and other relatives in the Philippines.
Arrangements are by Turnbull's Funeral Home.

On Nov. 9, 1922, Alban Ulric Anthony was born in East End, Tortola, to Ann Elizabeth Smith-Crabbe of East End and Nathaniel Anthony of Salt Island and Hannahs Estate.
At an early age, Anthony traveled with his mother to the Dominican Republic and Aruba. He returned to Tortola at the age of 8 and was admitted to the East End Primary School, where he received his education until he reached the seventh standard, the highest level available in the Virgin Islands at that time. During his time in the Dominican Republic, he learned Spanish and remained fluent to his death.
In the civil service, Anthony worked as a Customs Officer, the officer in charge of Public Works, administrative secretary and permanent secretary in the Ministry of Communications, Works and Industry. In 1975, his desire to represent the fourth district became a reality with the assistance of stalwarts in the community. He served the fourth district and the territory for two terms, first as minister of Communications, Works and Industry and then as deputy chief minister and minister of Natural Resources and Labour. He retired from public office in 1983 after 36 years of public service.
