ST. CROIX - St. Croix native Amira Alexander has been getting her Tiger Woods on in Georgia.
For the last several years, her golfing skills has carried her all over the lower 48. Her game has progressed so much that she was recently tabbed by the American Junior Golfers Association as a Junior All-Star.
The American Junior Golf Association is a tour that has had players like Tiger Woods, Michelle Wie and many other professionals play their junior years with AJGA. Alexander earned the accomplishment by winning earlier this year at Callaway Gardens, Ga.
Alexander is scheduled to fly to Orlando, Fla., on Friday to pick up her award. At that time, she is also scheduled to participate in the three-day Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational, which will be played at Howey-in-the-Hills through Monday.
Alexander has had an interesting season. In July, she played in the Junior PGA Championship, held in Maineville, Ohio. Alexander finished 31st out of 75 entrants. Alexander, just 15, was one of the youngest participants. The young Crucian was too good to be left out of the four-day tourney, which was for the best 16-to-18 year olds.
Alexander got a chance to play in the Junior PGA after winning the Bill Hicky Tournament, which features the top minority players in the nation. The tournament was held in Alpharetta, where she resides. She dominated the field and won the overall tournament.
Her overall play has led to several inquiries from major colleges. Despite just being in the 10th grade, Tim Duncan's alma mater Wake Forest has shown serious interest, along with Indiana University, the University of Florida, Central Florida and Tulane.
"The correspondences have been coming in fast and furious," said Amira's father, John Alexander. "Those five schools are just the beginning. We expect a lot more letters in the next two years."
You can follow Alexander by logging on to: www.ajga.org. The scores will be available at the end of each round.
St. Croix college football stars
I was almost kicked out of St. Croix by the football establishment. The guys were upset that I wrote an article on St. Thomas players and gave the St. Croix players no love. Well, here is the love.
Alfredo and Rafael Henderson have been redshirted at College of Dupage. Fredo is a 5-foot, 10-inch 215-pound running back, and Rafy is 6-foot, 3-inch 190-pound quarterback. Rafae transferred in from Grossmont College in California.
According to their father, Terrell Henderson, "Both are expected to make an impact next season."
Former Central High Carib Jermaine Brown is defending passes at St. Augustine's College. Caribs coach Greg Tyler informed me that Brown was on St. Croix all summer working out and getting ready for the season.
Lee making name for himself
I was at the Sunstroke King of the Court basketball tournament on St. Thomas this past weekend and I bounced into Hoyas coach Samuel Lee. He and I spoke for a while about his son, Jahmal, who has been tearing it up in Orlando.
Lee is a lightning quick point guard who attends University High. Even ESPN has written an article about Lee's exploits. ESPN gave him a scouts grade of 80, which implies that he could be a three-or-four-year contributor with an opportunity to eventually start at a mid-major college basketball program.
Schools in Atlanta and North Carolina have shown interest in the junior. Lee and Rakeem Christmas of note in the Class of 2011.
