Adventist stuns Antilles, 3-2, in girls varsity volleyball play
By CHRIS WALSH
Thursday, October 29th 2009

ST. THOMAS - With only two weeks to go in the regular season, Seventh-day Adventist pulled off the season's biggest upset Tuesday when its girls volleyball team defeated the one-loss Antilles Lady 'Canes in five sets.

Rhea Simon, who shined in last weekend's Ocean Spray All Star game, led the way for Seventh-day with 10 kills and six assists.

After falling two sets to none and looking all but out of the game, Seventh-day battled back to win the final three sets by nine combined points. Seventh-day won, 16-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, and 15-13.

In the first two sets, the Lady Canes looked dominating. They broke open a 22-10 lead in the first before holding on for the nine-point win.

After being knotted up at five in the second set, Antilles broke away with a 18-8 run and cruised to a 25-18 win.

In the third set, Seventh-day began slowly turning things around after being tied up at six. The Lady Canes looked to be clawing their way back when they closed the gap at 24-22, but an unforced error gave Adventists their first set.

The fourth set was just like the third with Seventh-day opening a 19-14 lead before a 5-1 run by Antilles cut the lead to one. Up 23-20, Adventists again pulled away, thanks to a few Antilles errors.

In the final set, the teams played long-volley after long-volley with hardly any errors or serve aces coming for either team. Seventh-day held the lead from the first point and never looked back as they won by the bare minimum to pull off the upset.

Seventh-day's Shenee' Martin had two kills and 10 assists and Oshana Mitchell had 11 assists.

The Antilles Hurricanes continued their winning ways by handing Seventh-day Adventist a three-set loss on Tuesday. The Canes were coming off an Ocean Spray tournament win last weekend.

The Hurricanes won, 25-14, 25-21, 25-22.

In the first set, Antilles domintated, holding at least a nine-point lead through much of the match en route to an 11-point win.

With substitutions by the Canes over the next two sets, the undersized Adventist team kept it close in the second and third. But once the winning point was in sight the Canes rolled away with big runs for the victory.

Antilles' Alex Blythe had seven kills and five assists. Makil Bedminster had 11 kills and Cullen Diehl had seven kills and four assists.
