Devil Rays outlast Pirates in a sloppy 14-8 victory
By CHRIS WALSH

Daily News Photos by CRISTIAN SIMESCU Kean High quarterback Jolly Joseph scrambles with the ball against the Pirates on Friday night.

ST. THOMAS - In the spirit of Halloween, the Ivanna Eudora Kean Devil Rays and St. Croix Private Schools Pirates put on a show so ugly that it was scary Friday night at Lionel Roberts Stadium.

After three hours, 67 combined plays and just 353 combined yards the Devil Rays emerged victorious, 14-8.

"Well it was a win, a sloppy one, but a win none the less," Kean head coach Tom Rathmann said. "I'm really disappointed with the energy we had. The kids acted dead, which was disappointing, because they are much better than that."

On a cool, breezy night at Lionel Roberts Stadium both teams struggled to get anything going offensively.

Kean (2-3) had just six first downs, two lost fumbles and seven penalties for 45 yards. The Pirates (0-6) had five first downs, three interceptions and 14 penalties for 69 yards.

Kean High defensive back Leo Greenaway, left, sacks Pirates quarterback Jon Pierre Modeste.

"I had no quarterback and my best offensive lineman wasn't there, but the Devil Rays played good so I have no complaints," Pirates head coach Ignacio Llanos said. "I'm proud of my boys to put up those yards without our quarterback though. Next week I promise a win, I'm not going out without a win this year."

Maybe the only part of the game that was earning style points was between Kean's free safety Olaniyan Garnette and Pirates wide receiver Caleb Marshack. Every time Pirates quarterback Jon Pierre Modeste dropped back to pass he was targeting Marshack, which made for an intriguing battle throughout the night.

In the end Marshack had all five of his team's receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown, while Garnette had two fourth quarter interceptions to hold off Pirates comeback drives.

The scoring got started early in the game after Modeste threw his first interception deep in Pirates territory. DeShawn Christian stepped in front of a slant route and made the pick on the Pirates' 33-yard line.

After an offsides penalty moved them five yards closer, Kean's Maleek Leonard took a hand-off 28 yards for the touchdown. Quarterback Jolly Joseph pitched out to Leonard who broke a half dozen tackles en route to the end zone.

A failed two-point try made the score 6-0 with 3:32 left in the first.

On the Pirate's next drive things went from bad too much worse. With first down at their own 5-yard line the Pirates managed to move back 4.9 yards after three plays and three penalties.

On fourth-and-13 from their own 1-inch line the Pirates took the punt snap and stepped out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

With an 8-0 lead at the start of the second quarter the Devil Rays would add to it after receiving the free kick. A six-play, 37-yard drive was capped off by a three-yard shovel pass from Joseph to Kevin Benjamin for the score.

After a failed two-point try, Kean held a 14-0 lead with 10:06 left in the first half.

The Pirates answered right back on their next possession when Marshack caught his first pass of the night. On first down from their own 47-yard line, Modeste hit Marshack for a 53-yard touchdown pass to narrow Kean's lead.

Marshack made a leaping catch while streaking down the right sideline and untouched into the end zone. Modeste ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-8 with 3:22 left in the half.

There would be no more scoring for either team. In fact, each team had just three first downs in the second half.

The Pirates and Devil Rays had their chances to add points, but turnovers plagued each team in the game's final minutes.

Kean was driving toward the end zone in the fourth quarter but a Joseph fumble gave the Pirates the ball on their own 7-yard line. After a 15-yard completion to Marshack, Garnette stepped up and made the interception with under three minutes left in the game.

The Pirates got the ball back with 29 seconds left and completed a 24-yard pass to Marshack to put them on the 40-yard line. Again though, the second pass was intercepted by a diving Garnette who wrestled the ball away from Marshack and sealed the Ray's second win of the year.

For the Pirates, Duvante Vegas had 20 of the team's 24 yards rushing on five carries. Shamoy James had seven tackles, a fumble recovery and a sack and Sean Clemente had five tackles and a sack.

For Kean, Joseph had 61 yards on 14 carries and went 3-for-9 for 21 yards and a score through the air. Leonard added 61 yards on six carries. Leo Greenaway had four tackles and Akeem Freet had the team's lone sack.
