Complex wins to repeat as St. Croix champions
By CHRIS WALSH
Saturday, October 31st 2009

Daily News Photos by SEAN McCOY Educational Complex's Brandon James scores a touchdown while being tackled by Central High's Kirby Alexis on Friday at Educational Complex field.

With just one week left to go in the regular season the Educational Complex Barracudas clinched the St. Croix district championship for a second straight year with a 46-6 win over the Central Caribs on Friday night at Educational Complex field.

The Barracudas, who are 5-1 and have now beat their rivals four straight times going back to last season, won by mercy rule with 6:19 left in the third quarter.

"I was pleased with the game and the team finally came together after two off weeks," Complex head coach Jason Woodard said. "Brandon James and William Tutein had really good games."

The junior running back and sophomore quarterback had exceptional games Friday afternoon, both scoring three rushing touchdowns. James' scores tied the game, gave Complex the lead and ended the game.

All three of Tutein's were on 1-yard quarterback sneaks.

With each school's band playing, the atmosphere was electric and the players fed off it.

Complex opened the game by recovering an onside kick but lost the ball on their second play from scrimmage. The Caribs responded immediately as freshman quarterback Dejani Rivera hit Ellison Carty for a 50-yard touchdown.

With 7:49 left in the first quarter, Central held a 6-0 lead, but it didn't last long. On Complex's next two drives, James tied the game and give his squad the lead with touchdown runs of four and eight yards.

James also ran in the two-point conversion after the second score to give Complex a 14-6 lead with 20 seconds left in the first quarter.

Central lost Rivera and starting running back Stanley Coram in the quarter, and it was a lopsided battle from then on.

Tutein began the rout when he got his first score of the night with a dive from 1-yard out with 7:49 left in the half. James ran in the two-point try to make the score 22-6.

The Caribs made matters worse for themselves on their ensuing possession when a fourth-down try failed. Carty was stopped on the run, fumbled, and Complex recovered the ball on the Central 9-yard line.

"We played a poor game, no blocking, no tackling," head coach George Clarke said. "We came out strong in the first quarter, but then we lost it. We feel next week will be a little better."

With the first half winding down, Tutein scored on his second 1-yard sneak. Anthony White scored the two-point conversion to give the Barracudas a 30-6 lead with 25 seconds left in the half.

Complex kept the scoring frenzy going in the second half when a 50-yard pass from Tutein to Jelani Rollins set up Tutein's third scoring dive of the night. James added the two-point conversion to make it 38-6 with 10:28 left in the third.

The Caribs continued fighting though and drove all the way down the field on the ensuing possession. But Complex's Keon Patrick made a huge play to set up the game's final drive.

Patrick made a goal-line tackle, forcing a fumble in the process, and the Barracudas returned it to their own 20-yard line. A few plays later, James sealed the game with a 57-yard touchdown run.

He also ran in the two-point conversion to give Complex a 40-point win. The Barracudas won by mercy rule both times they've faced Central this year, winning 42-0 in the season opener.
