ST. THOMAS - Taking a page from the NFL, Week 6 of the IAA high school tackle football league will conclude with a Monday game late this afternoon.
The Charlotte Amalie High School Chickenhawks will host the St. Thomas Private Schools Arawak Warriors at 5 p.m. today at their field in a game that has championship implications.
A win by the Chickenhawks (4-0) would put the defending champions back into the title game against the team they beat last year - and face this Saturday - Educational Complex. A win by the Arawaks (4-1), though, would shake up the whole landscape of the season and put them back atop the St. Thomas District standings.
The Chickenhawks have the league's top scoring offense, averaging 34 points per game, and the league's second-ranked scoring defense, allowing only 9.5 points per game.
They are led by a stingy defense and a trio of playmakers on offense. Quarterback Cursim Hansen is having a monster year in his first season under center. Senior running back Devin Pruitt looks to return this week after leaving last week's win over Ivanna Eudora Kean High after the second play of the game with an ankle injury. Wide receiver Elvis Richardson Jr. will also be looking to get back into the end zone after being held out of it for the first time this season last week.
In the teams' last meeting, Richardson had three catches for 75 yards and two scores and Pruitt had 113 yards and a score on 19 carries.
The Arawaks are coming off a win last week that nearly broke the scoreboard at Lionel Roberts Stadium. They beat Central High School, 50-30, with senior Kyle Richardson running for 264 yards and scoring a record-tying six touchdowns on 21 carries.
In Week 2, Richardson had just 32 yards on 10 carries against CAHS, while Matt Cook had 93 yards on 16 carries.
This afternoon's game will be the third and final time that CAHS has hosted a game this season.
