Ceres Juices 10K Series wraps up Saturday
By Dean "Sports Man" Greenaway
Friday, November 6th 2009

The curtains will come down on the Ceres Juices 10K Series on Saturday afternoon on Tortola. The race starts at 4:30 p.m.

"This is going to be very exciting and we have rescheduled the start for an afternoon race - the first in the series to be held in the afternoon - primarily because of an awards presentation and cocktail party presented by Ceres Juices," said Kay Reddy, one of the coordinators. "While the race begins at 4:30, registration begins at 4 p.m. at the Watering Hole across from Banco Popular. The course is a warm-up for the BVI Half-Marathon, which is less than a month away and we will mirror the middle section of the half-marathon course."

The race starts at Banco Popular, heads out to Sea Cows Bay, and returns to Bobby's Roundabout before looping back to Banco Popular.

Steven Asson and Darwn Peters are the leaders, but Reddy said there are some great battles for other positions. Zebalon McLean currently leads Adrian Dale in the battle for second place, but if Dale beats McLean, Dale will get the silver.

There's also a battle for lower positions as well.

Among the women, Sally Blackmore is second to Peters but might not run because of a cycling accident in the recent Caribbean Cycling Championships. That will give Reddy second place if she is unable to participate. "Currently, my legs are absolutely gone," said Reddy, who contested last month's Chicago Marathon and did the Women of Power Walk last weekend. "I found muscles I didn't know existed. I know it won't be a personal best but I need to basically finish in second or third place to jump ahead of Sally. So, I've got my work cut out despite having no legs this weekend."

Haiti gets CONCACAF record 24-0 victory over BVI

Host Haiti overpowered the British Virgin Islands, 24-0, in the opening day of play in Group A of the CONCACAF Women's Under-17 soccer event at Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince.

Roseland Bordella found the nets eight times and Yolande Merone kicked in another five against the visiting BVI team.

Hairoun Stars whip Wolues in BVI soccer

After the Wolues opened the scoring early in the first half of their BVI Football Association encounter on Virgin Gorda, the Hairoun Stars scored six unanswered goals for a 6-1 victory.

The Wolues got off to a great start and were rewarded when midfielder James Shearman scored from the penalty spot after Maxford Pipe deliberately mishandled the ball inside the box.

Five minutes later, Hairoun's Lenard Davis knotted the match at 1-1, then built a 4-1 halftime advantage against a porous Wolues defense after Davis added a second score. Marlon Felix and Cedric Mars also added goals.

The Wolues manager reshuffled his lineup, making two substitutions during halftime, but the changes resulted in two more goals. Mars picked up his second legger and Terry Baptiste had the last score.

Islanders blast Ball Stars, 17-0

In a clash between youth and experience, experience prevailed as Islanders kept their unbeaten streak alive with a convincing 17-0 drubbing of Virgin Gorda Ball Stars. Henry Mitchell was in devastating form, as he warmed up with a first-half hat trick and was joined by Nano Othley, who matched his feat for a 6-0 advantage.

Mitchell bulldozed the Ball Stars' defense in the second half by adding seven more goals to finish with 10 on the night.

With a torrential rainstorm further dampening the VG Ball Stars' spirits, striker Venton James, veteran Noel Isaacs and goalkeeper Shain Henry all scored against the Ball Stars to end the game.

Three cities seeking to host Pan Am Games 2015

Just more than a month after Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was awarded the hosting rights for the 2016 Olympic Games, Olympic Committees in the Americas are in the process of determining who will host the 2015 Pan American Games during a meeting in Guadalajara, Mexico, U.S. and British Virgin Islands officials will be among the voters.

While it was the International Olympic Committee members who voted for the cities bidding for the Olympic Games, it will be the 42 Olympic Committees comprising the Pan American Sports Organization that will determine if Bogota, Colombia; Toronto or Lima, Peru, will host the 2015 edition. Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2007 event.
