ST. THOMAS - Just seven weeks after the first ball was kicked into the air and the crowds cheered under the Friday night lights, the 2009 season has come to its conclusion.
But before the foam fingers and body paint are put away for 10 months, fans still have one last chance to see high school football on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
Week 7 begins tonight at 7 when the St. Thomas Private Schools Arawak Warriors host the Ivanna Eudora Kean Devil Rays at Lionel Roberts Stadium on St. Thomas and the St. Croix Private Schools Pirates host the Central High Caribs at Educational Complex field on St. Croix.
On St. Thomas, the Arawaks will be trying to rebound from a heartbreaking, last-second loss just four days ago, while the Devil Rays will be coming in hot after a close win last Friday.
The Arawaks' hopes at a St. Thomas title were dashed on a Hail Mary touchdown pass Monday night that put Charlotte Amalie back in the big dance. The Arawaks never trailed in the game until the final second ticked off the clock.
But the young 18-man squad, coached by rookie head coach Luke Neely, doesn't plan on going out on bad note this year. Lead by Neely's strong single-wing rushing attack, the Arawaks (4-2) will face a team they've already defeated once this season.
Kean High earned their second win in three weeks when they defeated the Pirates, 14-8, last Friday, and they'll be looking for payback tonight against the Arawaks. The Devil Rays lost 28-0 to the Arawaks in Week 3, but they have been much improved since then.
After not scoring a point in their first two games, the Devil Rays (2-3) have been outscoring opponents, 23-15, the last three weeks.
On St. Croix, the Pirates will be looking for their first win of the year - something head coach Ignacio Llanos guaranteed after their loss to Kean last week. They'll have a chance against a Central team that barely beat them, 40-32, in Week 2.
The Pirates (0-6) suffered a major injury to quarterback Michael Nelthropp, but Jon Pierre Modeste stepped in efficiently last week.
Central (1-5) has also had its share of injuries, but the freshman-heavy squad has continued to improve throughout the year. In the Caribs win over the Pirates, freshman signal-caller Dejani Rivera had three touchdown passes.
The regular season concludes on Saturday when the "Territory Championship Part 1" takes place at Complex field. The Barracudas will play host to CAHS, a team they'll see again in the championship game.
The top offenses will square off with talented playmaking quarterbacks looking to run up the score.
CAHS (5-0) is led by Cursim Hansen, a first-year starter who led his team on two fourth-quarter scoring drives to come back and beat the Arawaks on Monday. He also has found a new favorite target in Brandon Wadsworth, who caught both touchdown passes in their Monday win.
The Barracudas (5-1) are led by a second-year starter at quarterback, sophomore William Tutein. Last week, Tutein led his team to a big 46-6 mercy rule win over Central by running for three touchdowns in the romp. Star running back Brandon James will also help out in the backfield.
The two teams will face each other on St. Thomas in the territorial championship, but the game's Nov. 14 date has been postponed because of scheduling conflicts with both schools.
