ST. THOMAS - One night, two games and two new varsity volleyball champions. The Charlotte Amalie High School gym played host to two of the year's best games as the CAHS Lady Hawks and the Antilles Hurricanes took their place atop the St. Thomas-St. John IAA District.
The Hurricanes won their second title in three years by knocking off CAHS in five sets, 26-28, 25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 15-7. The CAHS girls defeated reigning champion Antilles in five sets, 25-15, 14-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-10.
In the boys game, the Hurricanes were able to retake the title that CAHS beat them for last season. Alex Blythe was a big reason for that as he led the team with 19 kills and four blocks.
"They worked hard, they deserve it," Antilles head coach John Riggle said. "We've been pretty even with CAHS, so we were confident coming in. We expected it to go five games and we got it."
Nearly everyone in the packed CAHS gym knew the game was going the distance after the first set, when the Chickenhawks needed a few extra points to win by two. CAHS held an early 8-3 lead, but had to fight back with five unanswered points to tie it up at 21 apiece.

Charlotte Amalie took the lead at 25-24, then held on to win 28-26 in the first.
In the second game the Hurricanes came alive and put together their best run of the night. Ahead 14-10, the Canes went on an 11-3 run to run away with the second set.
They did nearly the same thing in the third when they turned a 16-13 lead into 20-13 en route to cruising to a win.
Antilles looked like they were on their way to a win in the fifth set with a 17-13 lead, but CAHS battled back to tie it at 19 and break away for a four-point win. Then in the fifth and final set, the Hurricanes jumped out to 7-2 and never looked back for a five-point win and the championship.
Antilles' Makenzie Shaw and Makil Bedminster had 10 kills each and Brian Richardson had 40 assists and four kills. CAHS' Charles Pemberton led his team as a persistent force at the net all night.
In the girls game, the Lady Hawks were finally able to overcome perennial champion Antilles and win for the first time in six years.
"It's a great feeling," CAHS head coach Janelle Sarauw said. "The team was a little shaky this season because they were so young. But we focused on the fundamentals and had our ups and downs, but kept getting better. I figured we had the most athletic team and I can turn an athlete into a volleyball player."
The best matchup of the game was at the net with Charlotte Amalie's Amara Williams continuously blocking shots and teammate Elisa Aska playing good defense alongside her. Antilles was led by the strong offense of Caprisha Richards and Morgan Rosenberg.
The two squads flip-flopped the first two sets with CAHS winning by 10 in the first, then losing by 11 in the second.
In the third, CAHS pulled away from a 14-10 lead and made it 23-13 before winning by six. After the Lady Canes nearly came back in the third, they pulled it off in the fourth in a big way.
Antilles battled back from down 18-13 to tie it at 21, then went on a 4-0 run for the win. In the fifth and final set, Charlotte Amalie took a 6-5 lead and never looked back for a 15-10 win to finally bring the title back to CAHS.
