Local veterans invited

to VA town hall meeting

The VA Caribbean Healthcare System will host a Veterans’ Town Hall Meeting on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Education Department’s Curriculum Center in Estate Tutu, St. Thomas.

The meeting will provide the opportunity to listen the feedback from veterans and family members regarding services provided by the Veterans Affairs Department. It also serves as a forum for the VA to provide information about the latest on health care services, choice program, compensation and pension and memorial benefits, among other topics.

Officials from the VA administration out of San Juan will provide information and answer questions.

Lecture looks at St. Croix archaeology discoveries

On Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Christiansted National Historic Site, the National Park Service and the Friends of the St. Croix National Parks will present a lecture by Dr. Steve Lenik.

This lecture presents the results of archaeological investigations at Estate Bethlehem Old Works, a sugar plantation that operated from the early Danish colonial period until the factory closed in 1966.

Lenik is an historical archaeologist of the African Diaspora whose has done fieldwork at plantations, missions, and military installations throughout the Caribbean, including St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, Dominica, and Jamaica. Currently, he teaches in the Anthropology Department at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

The lecture will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, Company Street, Christiansted. The fort parking lot will be open until 7 p.m.

The Friends of the St. Croix USVI National Parks welcome you to join them at 5 p.m. before the lecture in the same location to learn about the organization and its partners.

‘Chasing Coral’ will be shown across Virgin Islands

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announces that the Division of Coastal Zone Management will screen the environmental documentary, “Chasing Coral,” during the weekend of July 14.

The first screening will take place on Friday at The Westin Resort on St. John for the community and hotel guests.

The film will then be viewed on Saturday at The Buccaneer on St. Croix, and on Sunday at Coral World Ocean Park on St. Thomas.

All three events are free and open to the public.

The Philadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church will hold an event, “Reaching Out,” and offer free food, clothing, health screenings and prayer to those in need on Sunday at 9 a.m. at Mandela Circle on St. Thomas, across from Giant Gas.

Applications being taken for NatureTech Solutions Award

The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications for the 2017 NatureTech.Solutions Award for technical innovation.

Supported by the Potter Fund for NatureTech Solutions at CFVI, this $3,000 prize will be awarded to projects that have been built to increase the effectiveness of natural or cultural resource management in small islands in the Eastern Caribbean.

The St. Thomas Humane Society seeks dog and cat lovers, puppy and kitten lovers to volunteer their time assisting in the care of these pets. Dogs need walking, petting, love and play time.
