Triathlon national champs to be named at CCT
ST. CROIX - For the first time, the V.I. Triathlon Federation will name national triathlon champions at the Caribbean Classic Triathlon. The Olympic distance race - a 1,500-meter swim, 25-mile bike and 6.2-mile run - will be held Sunday at Buccaneer Hotel. The top male and female finishers, who must also be members of the VITF, will be crowned as individual champions. The race also will count as a points race for the overall V.I. Triathlon Point Series, the winners of which get free entry into the 2010 St. Croix Ironman 70.3.

Animal activists have seen his re-entry to the NFL as a slap in the face. Michael Vick is still a human being that deserves a second chance at being a benefit to our society.

For years we have been conditioned to respect individuals who work hard and criticize those who don't. But the question lies, what is considered hard work? Hard work to many, are those who work long hours, become physically drained, mentally disgruntled and do so for many years. I know the Bible says, "man should eat by the sweat of his brow," but hey come on. Everything in the Bible shouldn't to be taken literally. Your brow can be your brain and not necessarily your brawn. It also speaks about talents. Everyone's talents does not reside in their physical abilities. If that's the case, then Albert Einstein was also lazy and Thomas Edison's life was pointless and filled with hobbies.

Thinking about the story of the young girl who was gang raped recently during a school dance makes me feel physically ill. It is painful and nauseating to think about the horror she felt while it was happening to her and the horror she must relive every night as she tries to sleep. There is no way I can possibly fathom the nightmare she is enduring. It boggles my mind to think that she will have to live with this and find a way to survive it.

We, the friends of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, would like to thank Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls and Education Department Deputy Superintendent Joseph Sibilly for meeting with the administration, alumni, PTA members and our local community at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School on Oct. 28. The focus of the meeting was on the completion of the track and field and the much-needed repairs to the gymnasium, as well as other projects at the school that are long overdue.

This community is suffering --

I was sitting on the beach looking at the moon and the other islands. This truly is paradise. I think all of us in this community can see it, going down Cassi Hill, over town, Drake's Seat, everywhere that you look, you know it's paradise. But a lot of us are suffering and don't always see it.

Department of education must help transport kids --

Ricardo Richards Elementary School is overcrowded. As a direct result of this, my three children who reside in Estate Barren Spot have been transferred outside their school district to Alfredo Andrews Elementary School. I am a single parent raising my children on my own and I do not own a vehicle to handle the responsibility of transportation.

Learning to embrace simplicity again --

One of my weaknesses is ice cream. It's so bad that I cannot allow myself to have it in my freezer in any large quantities. I simply do not have enough self control to stop at a sensible amount so I just remove the temptation. For years I liked complicated ice cream. It had to have extras to it. Nuts, candy, sprinkles, swirls, ribbons, chunks, all kinds of bells and whistles. The more the better. So to save myself the stress of fighting temptation, I just keep it out of the house.
