We were born of the spirit of love, power and a sound judgment. If this is how we were born, then why isn't this the way we die? What happens during our lives has the ability to rewrite who we naturally are. Hate typically comes with a strong aggressive series of emotions behind it. Violence, disrespect and disregard are some of behaviors that follow hate. But let's be honest. We mostly hate what we don't understand. We find ourselves hating people that we barely know. We end up hating cultures we don't know the history about. We even have "hate crimes" to highlight the motives of a criminal. However, we were born of love.

The good thing about our memories is we are able to reflect and reminisce on the great things we've experienced and be inspired over our futures. The bad thing about our memories is we are able to remember and reconnect with the horrible things we've experienced and be doubtful and guarded over our futures. The significant difference about our good and bad memories is the good things allow us to trust and bad things cause us to judge.

We trust people to not open the exit doors on airplanes. We trust folks not to toss us off of bridges as walk by each other. We trust folks to stay on their side of the road while driving. We even trust folks not to break our hearts. We are innately designed to trust. We believe that each of us share the same interests of peace, harmony and tranquility. We believe each of us value life as much as we do. So where does mistrust come from?

When I was in St. Louis for the launch of the Redirection Boycott for Black Beauty Supply Stores on Nov. 16, I encountered a very interesting discussion. We were at my friend, Sojohna Bell's Ladyz of Elegance Salon in St. Louis, Mo., when her father and the president of the St. Louis Cosmetology Association, Jeff Houston, got into a healthy debate. They argued who had more influence, the black church or the black salon. One backed the church because of its historical legacy in bringing black people together and executing movements. The other argued that before folks go to church, they go get their hair "done." The friendly debate was entertaining, yet insightful.

Gift cards emerged onto the American consumer market with huge fanfare. This is how it works. You go to a company of your choice and buy a gift card in any amount and later retrieve the value of the card in products or services. This has been a great marketing tool for businesses as it promotes a simpler way to shop for others. Large companies pioneered this phenomenon that became widely accepted by the consumers. So what is it really - a gift card or a lift card?

Why do we let the 6 percent of cigarette smokers dictate for the 94 percent of nonsmokers in the territory? Is it because we do not know that cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals that include formaldehyde, arsenic and cyanide? Do we know that the tobacco industry kills about 50,000 nonsmokers each year? Do we know that secondhand smoke causes heart disease, emphysema, asthma and other lung diseases? Do we know pregnant women who are exposed to secondhand smoke increase their chances of delivering a low birth weight baby, which puts the baby at risk for sudden infant death syndrome or other health problems?
