St. Croix — As the mother of a 4-year-old boy and her boyfriend await trial on charges related to his killing, local child advocate groups say they hope the Virgin Islands can learn from his death.

Aaron Benjamin died on Oct. 11 inside the Lorraine Village home of his mother, 29-year-old Delicia Daniel. The boy, according to a V.I. Police affidavit filed in the case, died at the hands of Kyle Christopher, 22, hours after he’d slapped him in the face over “stealing” juice from his younger sibling. Christopher told police during questioning that the child fell, hit his head on a chair and began vomiting and stumbling shortly thereafter.
