Bill to rework school calendar advances

Sen. Janelle Sarauw speaks in support of a bill that makes changes to the calendar for public schools in the territory and mandates how much time children must spend in the classroom.

ST. THOMAS — A yearslong effort to alter the territory’s school calendar is on the cusp of paying off, as members of the Senate Rules and Judiciary Committee approved a bill Thursday to have the school year start and end earlier than before.

According to Bill 33-0019, sponsored by Senators Kurt Vialet; Donna-Frett-Gregory; Janelle Sarauw and Kenneth Gittens, the school year must begin no later than the second week in August and end no later than the last Friday in May.
