Black sludge running down the side of the Bovoni landfill on St. Thomas is treated liquid sewage poured out to dry, according to the V.I. Waste Management Authority.

The Anguilla Landfill on St. Croix has reopened after another fire at the facility was reported Tuesday, and the V.I. Waste Management Authority said Thursday that residents shouldn’t be concerned about the black sludge oozing out of the Bovoni Landfill on St. Thomas.

But the V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources is investigating the sludge, which is treated liquid sewage left over from the territory’s wastewater treatment plant, according to DPNR spokesman Jamal Nielsen.
