Carnival

“Carnival Meets the Runway” will be held at 7 tonight at the Ann Abramson Marine Facility in Frederiksted, St. Croix.

ST. CROIX — The climax of the Crucian Christmas Festival is about three months away, but this weekend festival lovers will get a glimpse of the explosion of creativity and culture to come with the presentation of “Carnival Meets the Runway.”

Event director Alvin Burke Jr. said the show, now in its fifth year, could best be described as a prelude to the upcoming festival season and all the glamorous designs and concepts brought forth by the various troupes.

“After having to cancel the event last year because of the hurricanes, we are excited to be able to feature some of what can be expected for our festival in January,” Burke said.

The event is at 7 tonight at the Ann Abramson Marine Facility in Frederiksted. Troupes presenting their themes will include Simply Sophisticated; Regal Dynasty; Lockhart and Associates; Fantasy Fete; Savage Festival; Gentlemen of Jones; TSK Troupe and Pure Mas Festival Troupe.

Burke said a lot of moving parts are factored into presenting an unforgettable festival troupe. He said that it takes teamwork, dedication and a lot of behind-the-scenes work — from the birth of the concept for each theme, to the parade day when the troupes make their way down the route.

“It’s amazing the amount of layers that are associated with the presentation of the festival troupe. We want to continue to get people excited to not only see the troupes, but to also get them excited to get involved in making costumes and to even join at least one of the troupes and ensure that this valuable art form is preserved,” said Burke.

The event previously has been held at The Palms at Pelican Cove, but it has outgrown that venue.

“The excitement is there and the troupes are ready to showcase how their ideas will come to life,” Burke said. “I’m expecting a great crowd, lots of color and great energy as each of the eight troupes take to the stage.”

In addition to the troupe performances, there also will be live performances by Party Monarch Adam O, Soca Sensation Pumpa, Big Daddy Jeff, Swanks, Calypso Monarch Caribbean Queen, Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights, Bugs Z Bugs and St. Vincent’s Fimba, with his hit song “Mind Your Funky Business.”

Entertainment will also include a presentation from Sophat Burlesque Dance Group out of Detroit, Mich.
