V.I. Elections Board members have filed an appeal of V.I. Superior Court Judge Denise Francois’ ruling that affirmed the consolidation of the territorial boards into one unified body, according to court records.
“The ambiguity surrounding the existence of the district boards and the single Board has enveloped the Virgin Islands Election System in a cloud of legal uncertainty,” according to the motion for an expedited appeal filed Tuesday by the board members’ lawyer, Julita de Leon. “Until this Court offers a final resolution, the public and employees of the Election System will suffer continuing anxiety and disruption. Further, defendants have suffered and will continue to suffer irreparable injury: the loss of their statutory right to function as members of district boards. The court should, therefore, expedite review of this case to promote stability in the territory’s election system.”
