WASHINGTON, D.C. — To my left sat a Harvard-educated lawyer turned councilman from Chicago. To my right, the husband of a midwestern Republican senator.

The three of us, perched in the gallery above the House floor in Washington, D.C., along with hundreds of others invited to last week’s State of the Union address, made for an unlikely trio, sharing little in common save for the cramped spacing in between our seats.
