Federal prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against eight defendants charged with operating a conspiracy that involved drug dealing, five murders and a half-dozen armed robberies, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court.

U.S. Attorney for the Virgin Islands, Gretchen Shappert, filed a notice on June 13 that “the Attorney General has authorized and directed the U.S. Attorney not to seek the death penalty against Paul Girard Jr., Shaquan Prentice, Robert Brown, Shaquille Correa, James Cruz, Kareem Henry, Tyler Eugene, and Shermyra Gumbs,” according to court documents.
