ST. THOMAS — Downtown Charlotte Amalie came to a virtual standstill Wednesday afternoon when a reported gas leak at the Farrelly Justice Center held up traffic for an hour and led to a mass evacuation of the surrounding area.

The leak, which was reported by a court employee around 1 p.m., stemmed from a ruptured 500-gallon propane tank, located under the sally port in the secure, parking area behind the Farrelly complex, according to V.I. Fire Services Director Daryl George.
