A man is suspected to have drowned off Shoys Beach on St. Croix after his body was recovered Sunday, police said.
Police received a call at around 9:26 a.m. Friday from a family member reporting that a man named Jovere Williams, 24, was missing from Shoys Beach.
The caller said Williams was performing carpentry in Estate Shoys and walked to the shore to refresh himself when he was swept out by a rip current, police said.
Williams’ employer and a family member found his body on Sunday at around 11:44 a.m. The body, which had washed up on the beach, was identified by next of kin at 12:30 p.m., police said.
The V.I. Police Forensic Unit responded to the scene where the body was found, police said.
Officers from V.I. Police and the Department of Planning and Natural Resources removed the body and transported it by boat to the Gallows Bay dock where it was turned over to the staff of the Medical Examiner’s Office, police said.
