ST. THOMAS — The new two-level parking garage at the Urman Victor Fredericks Marine Terminal in Red Hook is scheduled to open the week of July 4.
The $5.9 million project will allow for 158 vehicles — compared to 100 vehicles before — and will include more accessible parking for physically challenged drivers, according to V.I. Port Authority spokeswoman Monifa Marrero Brathwaite.
The project also includes landscaping and improvements to the parking lot’s drainage system, Brathwaite said.
Parking rates remain the same, ranging from $2 for up to an hour; to $10 for more than four hours.
Overnight parking is $10 per day.
Construction of the facility started in 2016, but was delayed after Hurricane Irma damaged the construction site.
The Port Authority is currently leasing a lot owned by the V.I. Property and Procurement Department — the lot is located adjacent to the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School — to provide off-site parking during the construction of the garage.
Once the garage is completed, the lot will be returned to Property and Procurement, according to Brathwaite.
The lot, however, will accommodate travelers attending off-island events on the following dates:
- June 14 to 16
Buju Banton’s Long Walk to Freedom Concert, Tortola, BVI
- June 28 to July 4
St. John Festival, Cruz Bay, St. John
The temporary lot will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight, and the parking fee will be a flat rate of $10 per day.
