V.I. lawmakers passed legislation this week that would criminalize rape by fraud, a glaring gap in the V.I. Code that recently allowed a man convicted of rape and sentenced to 10 years in prison to walk free.

The legislation, which came in the form of a non-germane amendment to Bill 33-0030, which involved trademark renewal fees, was introduced by Senate Majority Leader Marvin Blyden during Tuesday’s legislative session.
