Virgin Islands lawmakers are taking a closer look at past campaign contributions after two freshman senators said they had received $1,000 checks from Southern Trust Company Inc. without realizing the business is owned by multimillionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The first-term senators, Alicia Barnes and Donna Frett-Gregory, both issued written statements Monday disavowing any connection with Epstein and Southern Trust Company.
