ST. JOHN — On what is “arguably the most important day in Virgin Islands history,” according to emcee Pamela Richards Samuel, around 100 residents and some visitors gathered in St. John Festival Village for an Emancipation Day program presented by the St. John Drama Club. The club performed a play, called “Who is Breffu,” detailing the story of the female Akwamu leader who played a pivotal role in the 1733 slave insurrection on St. John.

“This is the power of women in the Virgin Islands community,” said Richards Samuel, when it was revealed that Breffu, who at the time was assumed to be a man, was in fact a woman.
