A Syrian teenager who turned himself in to V.I. Police after fleeing his war-torn homeland has been granted asylum and will be allowed to remain in the United States, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court.

George Soufan presented himself to V.I. Police seeking asylum on March 15, 2019, when he was 18 years old. He was arrested and charged with unlawful entry, a federal crime.
