The holiday weekend will kick off Coral Bay-style today at 4 p.m. with Thankspigging, a gathering with modest roots that is now in its 19th year.

This year’s Thankspigging theme is a nod to the event’s signature feature, which will notably be missing today. The “Empty Spit Feed” theme is a reference to the 100-pound pig on a spit that’s typically the centerpiece for Thankspigging. Organizer Ken Yolman has been off island attending to health issues and though he did make it back to St. John for his annual Thanksgiving celebration, his friends have stepped in with deep fried turkeys in the pig’s absence.
