V.I. lobster harvest could be limited

Public comment is being sought on the spiny lobster trap fishery in the Virgin Islands.

The public is invited to comment on a proposed control date for the spiny lobster trap fishery in federal waters around the U.S. Virgin Islands, which could potentially limit future entry into the fishery.

The Caribbean Fisheries Management Council has selected a proposed control date of Sept. 1, 2017, because “soon thereafter, hurricanes Maria and Irma severely curtailed fishing activities in the USVI. Therefore, the Council determined the period prior to September 1, 2017, best represents historic participation in the spiny lobster trap fishery in the USVI,” according to Allison Garrett, communications specialist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fisheries division.
