The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority has taken a step toward providing St. John with backup power.

Two backup facilities will be built on the island, one in Coral Bay and the other in Cruz Bay, according to WAPA spokesman Jean Greaux Jr. Each of the facilities will include a four-megawatt Wärtsilä generator and a megawatt of battery storage.
