It is tradition. We are not unique in this. Most island dwellers have some sort of New Year’s tradition that involves the beautiful waters that surround us. In our family, for at least the last four years, we have gone snorkeling on the first day of the calendar year.

We have our favorite beach. Who doesn’t? We love ours because we always see turtles and rays and it’s near our house. So, as per our usual habit, we headed down to the beach Wednesday morning. It was already getting crowded with others who had same idea as we did. I mean, what better way to kick off the new year than limin in the sunshine on a beautiful beach? Plus, it was Haitian Independence Day.
