A moment’s reflection and some simple arithmetic would convince even the most cynical among us that in its payment of $1,500 to each board member per meeting — plus $2,000 to its chairman — the West Indian Co. is basically scamming the people of the Virgin Islands.

When asked a question in regard to the exorbitant stipends being paid to WICO board members, Interim President and CEO Anthony Ottley did not answer the question but suggested instead that the $700,000 payment in lieu of taxes, or PILOT, mandated to be paid by WICO, should be decreased (“WICO’s BIG problem,” The Daily News, Oct. 18, 2019).
