St. Thomas Little League opens 2020 season today

St. Thomas’ Little League teams will open their season today with an official opening ceremony at Joseph Aubain Ballpark in Frenchtown.

The ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. with a “Parade of Teams” starting at Emancipation Garden, with all of the league teams marching to Aubain Ballpark for the ceremonies, which are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

For the second year, the Elrod Hendricks West and Alvin McBean East Little League organizations are combining to field leagues in five divisions — girls softball, senior league baseball, 50/70 intermediate baseball, Little League baseball and Pee Wee baseball.

Among the guest speakers at today’s opening ceremonies will be Gov. Albert Bryan Jr., Lt. Gov. Tregenza Roach and V.I. Sports, Parks and Recreation Department commissioner Calvert White.

Following the opening ceremonies, five games are scheduled to be played beginning at 11 a.m.: Rebels vs. Prospects (Little League), Dodgers vs. Twins (Little League), Blazing Stars vs. V.I. Pride (Pee Wee League), Ravens vs. Blue Jays (girls softball) and Pirates vs. Sluggers (Little League).

League games will be played at three locations — Aubain Ballpark, Emile Griffith Ballpark and Alvin McBean Ballpark — on St. Thomas through April.

2020 St. Croix Scenic 50 road races set for today

Registration is still open for the 2020 St. Croix Scenic 50 road races, scheduled for today.

The Scenic 50 will feature three races — a 50-mile run, a 50-kilometer (31.1-mile) run and a 50-mile relay race.

The 50-mile run and 50-mile relay will begin at 5 a.m. in Christiansted, while the 50-kilometer run will begin at 7 a.m. at the top of “the Beast,” one of the highest points on St. Croix.

All three race routes run east to west and back again to the finish in Christiansted at the Buccaneer Resort’s Mermaid Beach.

The entry fee is $150 per runner for the 50-mile race, $125 per runner for the 50-kilometer race, and $272 per team for the 50-mile relay. The 50-mile relay can have teams of 2-4 runners.

Women’s Jogger Jam set for Sunday on St. Thomas

Registration is now open for the 38th annual Women’s Jogger Jam, scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday on St. Thomas.

The two-mile race for girls and women – participants can walk, jog or run – will begin at Schneider Hospital at 4:30 p.m., with the finish line in the parking lot at the Wheatley Center shopping center.

Tank tops will be given to the first 250 register finishers, with trophies to the top finisher and the top three in nine age groups.

A team challenge award will also go to the school and organization with the most participants.

Participants can register in advance at the Fruit Bowl in Wheatley Center or Caribbean Surf Co.’s Red Hook store. The entry fee is $10 for adults in advance and $15 on race day, and $5 for youth ages 18-under.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Family Resource Center Inc., with the owners of the Fruit Bowl donating $5 for every person that crosses the finish line.

USVISA begins U-15 girls development program

The U.S. Virgin Islands Soccer Association is looking for interested girls soccer players ages 15 and under to take part in a developmental program on both St. Croix and St. Thomas.

The program, open to girls born January 2005 or later, is to introduce the prospects to the fundamentals of soccer, and build a pool of players to participate in tournaments on the local, regional and international level.

St. Thomas Swimming holds after-school lessons at pool

The St. Thomas Swimming Association has resumed its after-school swimming lessons and swim team training programs.

The swimming lessons are held from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and cost $20 per person for a group lesson or $30 per person for private lessons.

The swim team training programs are held from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. for Bronze and Silver level teams, and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the Gold level team.
