Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands opened his weekend at the International Association of Athletics Federation’s World Championships with a win in his men’s 400-meter hurdles heat race Friday.

McMaster, 22, advanced to today’s semifinal round in Doha, Qatar, by winning the second of five heat races, posting a time of 49.60 seconds. Meanwhile, St. Croix native Malique Smith struggled in his heat race, failing to advance in his first IAAF Worlds.
